Coddiwomple

Coddiwomple

coddiwomple — (v.) To travel purposefully toward an as-yet-unknown destination.

The traditional word is “retire.” A verb that signifies the end of an action. My journey is not ending. It is just beginning again.

I’ve spent my entire adult career in the not-for-profit world, including the last 11+ years at the Foundation. There is something wonderful and unique about working for a mission rather than a profit. It gives my life and career purpose. I don’t think I will ever be ready to give that up.

So, on January 1st, I begin another coddiwomple.

Life is really just a series of coddiwomples. Is there a better word to describe medical school? Marriage? Parenthood?

My future has a purpose. I’ve decided it’s time to jump into the field of politics. I’ve applied for an open position on the city council in my hometown. I may or may not be appointed in January, but I’ll be on the ballot next November. My Osteopathic Health Policy Fellowship provides a great experience to help me become a better public servant in this role.

Speaking of the OHPF, I’ve been asked to serve on their new National Advisory Board. I’m glad to find a small way to keep promoting the principles and philosophies of osteopathic medicine into public health policy.

Linda and I are homebodies, but we plan to do a bit of domestic traveling, starting with a trip to NYC with some dear friends this spring. We also love volunteering in our little town, so we plan to do that together. I also do a lot of public speaking and writing as a member of a Masonic Research Lodge, and I look forward to having more time to dedicate to that. More than everything else, I’m looking forward to being with Linda every day for the rest of our lives.

And although we can afford to retire, living isn’t getting any cheaper. I’m keeping the employment opportunity door open. Linda’s hinting I should teach community college or manage a free clinic. I’m thinking, “Would you like fries with that?” Seriously, I really enjoy the CFO part of my work. Let’s see what the universe has to offer.

For some of us, this is goodbye. Thanks for everything you have done to support me and the Foundation. For those who wish to keep in touch, you already know how to contact me or you can find me on LinkedIn. Until we meet again, I wish you and yours a Happy Holiday season and a blessed and Happy New Year.
