Student Doctor Jessica Downs

B.E. “Genie” Willis, D.O. Women’s Scholarship Recipient

Jessica Downs is a medical student at Pacific Northwest University College of Osteopathic Medicine (PNWU-COM), recognized for her academic excellence, professionalism, and deep commitment to osteopathic principles.

A magna cum laude graduate of Lewis-Clark State College, Jessica entered medical school with a strong foundation in science and a passion for patient-centered care.

Her service to the Yakima community has been wide-ranging and impactful. At the Union Gospel Mission Free Clinic, she volunteered as a student provider, helping evaluate and treat patients who often waited much of the day for care—an experience that reinforced her belief that compassion and continuity are as vital as any prescription.

Jessica has also led community education initiatives, including plant-based cooking classes at Healthy Eats Kitchen, and teaching culinary medicine at Wellness House, where she empowered families to make lasting, healthy changes through nutrition and lifestyle.
Over the past four years, she has volunteered more than 200 hours with Special Olympics Yakima, earning Gold and Silver TOUCH Awards for service. Coaching athletes of all abilities taught her that advocacy begins with inclusion and that leadership means helping others grow.

As President of the Student American Academy of Osteopathy chapter, Jessica organized community health events and represented PNWU nationally, while also serving as a student ambassador and mentor to future medical students.

Inspired by her rural upbringing, Jessica plans to practice Family Medicine in underserved communities across the Northwest—healing mind, body, and spirit.

In 2006, B.E. “Genie” Willis, D.O. established the Northwest Osteopathic Women’s Scholarship Fund to uplift women in medicine. Each year, it awards a $10,000 scholarship to a deserving woman from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, or Washington, honoring Dr. Willis’s legacy of empowerment and advocacy.
